Moving Company Advice - GTA Toronto Rentals

Check the reliability of the moving company, contact the local Better Business Bureau (BBB). Inquire about the company’s complaint record, see how these complaints were resolved.

Also, ask your friends, family and neighbors for recommendations and advice on movers.

Here are some general tips.
  • Ask all movers for references. 100% call them, ask if they would use them again.
  • Ask questions – ensure there is coverage for loss or damage of your items during the move. All licensed movers must provide liability for the value of goods they move. Usually, there are a few levels of liability that you can pick from and pay for.
  • Ask the right questions such as:
    1. Does the moving company subcontract its moving services?
    2. Are the subcontractors insured for damage or loss of items in transit?
    3. Will the contents of my home be on one truck the entire time? (Moving goods between trucks increases the potential for damage)
    4. What services are not listed on this move, and what do you charge for them OR is the price you quoted the final price?
    5. What training do your movers, packers and/or subcontractors receive (ie. packing and moving fragile items)?
    6. Ask them - How many Toronto Apartments for rent have you been contracted for in the last month? How many Toronto condos for rent have you been involved with in the last month?

Moving Tips - Packing

  1. You can save a lot of money if you do the bulk of the packing on your own.
  2. Limit yourself to non-fragile items.
  3. Leave the heavy items for a mover, or group of friends.
  4. Don't toss everything into one huge box. If you can't lift the box easily, it's too heavy!
  5. Lift with your knees, not your back.
  6. Personal belongings - jewelry, memorabilia, photo, hobby collections - pack these items yourself and take them with you.
  7. Get the proper boxes for your items - the right sizes and strengths.
  8. For your replaceable and non-fragile items, save money - use free boxes from supermarkets and the LCBO, or even from your office. Also wrap items in old newspaper.
  9. Take the time to pack everything carefully. Fill in empty spaces, minimize movement during transit.
  10. Pack plates and glass objects vertically, never flat and stacked.
  11. Purchase strong tape- duct tape or the plastic and strapping tape that movers use.
  12. Movers are required to inspect each box for shipment. Point out to the mover each box that you packed yourself, especially if they're fragile. Your mover may have the right to refuse to load any box they deem improperly packed. Any improperly packed boxes must be repacked either by you or the mover.. Keep in mind that movers are not liable for items they did not pack.
  13. Movers will not disconnect your major appliances.
  14. Movers will not transport living things such as your plants or pets.
  15. Movers will not transport or allow you pack hazardous materials, flammable products or dangerous products.
  16. Designate a room in your old home/apartment, and your new home/apartment as the room to place all of your boxes. Keep related boxes together.
